Identification Tips:
Samples may appear shiny. Do
not mistake shine for metallic luster. Talc does not have metallic
luster.
Talc does show cleavage although sharp angles and obvious cleavage planes are
seldom visible in inexpensive
classroom samples (lower right). The key to identification is 'hardness'. Talc
is the softest mineral on Moh's
scale. Scratching a sample with your fingernail will result in a rain of fine
talc particles easily seen on a black
desk or counter top. The mineral has a 'greasy feel' similar to rubbing talcum
powder between your fingers.
